Hello lovelies! I hope your day has been going well. Today’s post is a wrap-up of the books I read in the month of August. I read six books this month, and though I was fairly happy with that, I was hoping I’d be able to get through a few more books over the summer when I’m not as busy. Without further ado, here are the books I read this August.
1) Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K.Rowling (4/5 stars) – I really enjoyed this read! I think the reason I did is because I kept my expectations low going into it. I knew it was going to be different from the other books, as it was a screenplay and not written solely by J.K. I found that there were definitely a few character inconsistencies, as well as some very weird and unexplained scenes or occurrences. That being said, it was wonderful to be back in the Harry Potter world and seeing where all the characters ended up.
2) The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins (3.5/5 stars) – This was an interesting read, but I found it too slow-paced, causing the story to drag. It took me longer than I’d like to admit to guess the killer, which resulted from a whole cast of suspicious and unlikable characters. I really liked that aspect because I’d never experienced anything like it before. I also found the ending a little too far-fetched and contrived.
3) Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson (4/5 stars) – In true Morgan Matson fashion, this was a cute, well-written contemporary. I loved the scrapbook style of the pages, which fit well with the wonderful road trip theme. I enjoyed the characters and their interactions, but for some reason, it simply lacked a spark that prevented me from truly loving it. I would definitely still recommend this though, especially as a summer read.
4) Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas (re-read: 4/5 stars) – This was a re-read for me, as I had first read this back in 2013. My thoughts about it went all over the place, starting at 5 stars and then decreasing to 3 stars somewhere along the line (um… what? @my former self). Now that I’ve read it a second time, I can sincerely say that it was a solid 4 star novel! There is definitely some elements that I didn’t find to be properly explained, but the size of the series provides great potential for more development. And while I really liked Caelena, I found that she was almost too talented. Realistically, one person likely won’t master everything they encounter, or have an interest in every hobby. These items aside, it was a great book and I look forward to continuing the series.
5) P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han (3.5/5 stars) – I’m not going to lie, this was a bit disappointing. While still super cute and entertaining, the plot was lacking in my opinion, and definitely came across as second-book filler. I also found that Lara-Jean was annoyingly jealous in this novel, but otherwise the character interactions were definitely on point. Also: Kitty. I love her. Here’s hoping the third book is another five-star read like the first novel!
6) The Diviners by Libba Bray ( 5/5 stars) – WORDS DON’T EXPRESS. Seriously, everyone. Libba Bray did the most incredible job of painting an atmospheric and authentic New York City in the 1920s. The cast of characters were interesting, dynamic, and well-developed, and I adored each one of them. I also didn’t expect the mystery to be so creepy! It was completely spine-chilling and so well thought out. I am so thrilled that this book exceeded my already sky-high expectations.
